Discover more about Archaeological Site of Dimini

The Archaeological Site of Dimini, located 5 km west of Volos, unveils a captivating journey through prehistoric Greece. This site is known for its remarkable Neolithic settlement and the more recently excavated Mycenaean settlement, believed to be ancient Iolkos, the departure port of Jason and the Argonauts. The Neolithic settlement, dating back to the end of the 5th millennium BC, showcases a sophisticated community of 200-300 inhabitants living in 30-40 houses. The settlement's unique architectural feature is its six concentric stone enclosures, built in pairs, possibly serving as both soil retainers and boundary markers. Within these enclosures, houses were constructed around a central court. Discoveries here include stone and bone tools, pottery with dark geometric motifs, figurines, and jewelry. Adjacent to the Neolithic remains, the Mycenaean settlement reveals a well-organized urban center dating back to the 15th-12th centuries BC. This settlement features houses built along a main street, a pottery kiln, and two vaulted tombs, possibly belonging to the rulers of Iolkos. The unearthing of Linear B writing suggests a palace complex may have been part of ancient Iolkos. Visiting Dimini offers a glimpse into the daily life and advanced planning of these ancient societies. The site provides descriptive panels and, potentially, guided tours to enhance understanding of the historical artifacts.
