Discover more about Archimedes Museum

The Archimedes Museum, located in the heart of Archaia Olympia, is a unique institution dedicated to showcasing the remarkable achievements of Archimedes and ancient Greek technology. Housed in a two-story building provided by the Municipality of Ancient Olympia, the museum offers visitors an engaging and educational experience. The museum features meticulously reconstructed inventions of Archimedes, accompanied by rich audiovisual material in both Greek and English. Exhibits include detailed drawings, images, and complete bibliographical references, providing a comprehensive understanding of the context and functionality of each invention. Many exhibits are interactive, encouraging hands-on learning and a deeper appreciation for the principles of physics and mathematics that Archimedes pioneered. Among the notable exhibits are the Antikythera Mechanism, considered by some to have indirect fatherhood from Archimedes, along with other inventions such as the "cinema" and "robot-servant" of Philon, the automatic hydraulic clock, the "hydraulis" (a water organ), and the twin suction force piston pump of Ktesibios. The museum also highlights how Archimedes' inventions, such as bolts and nuts, gears and rules, pulleys and belts, hydraulic controllers and valves, served as foundations for complex technologies. The museum aims to demonstrate that ancient Greek technology during the 3rd century B.C. was surprisingly similar to the beginning of modern technology. The Archimedes Museum, along with the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology in Athens and Katakolon, creates a complementary panorama of Archimedes' legacy. It serves as a vibrant educational hub, attracting students, scholars, and curious minds, and fostering a love for science and history.
