Discover more about Garden of Heroes

The Garden of Heroes, located on the north side of Missolonghi, is a poignant and historically significant memorial park. Spanning nearly fourteen acres, this area served as a cemetery during the sieges of Missolonghi, honoring those who lost their lives fighting for the town's freedom. In October 1838, King Otto and Queen Amalia commissioned the construction of the current walls, mirroring the original fence. The garden is adorned with various monuments, including the Tomb of Heroes, where the remains of fallen fighters rest. Visitors can also find the monument of Markos Botsaris, busts of Dimitrios Makris, Noti Botsari, and Athanasios Rasikotsikas, and a monument to Swiss philhellene Ioannis Iakovos Mayer. A marble sculpture of Lord Byron, who died in Missolonghi in 1824 while supporting the Greek cause, stands as a tribute to his commitment. In 1858, King Otto and Queen Amalia donated a ceramic lion, which was placed atop the Tomb. The garden serves as a place of remembrance, cultural reflection, and education, hosting commemorative events, especially during the annual Exodus anniversary in April. The serene atmosphere invites visitors to contemplate the values of liberty and human dignity.
