Discover more about Panagia Tripiti

Panagia Tripiti, also known as the Church of Zoodochos Pigi (Life-Giving Spring), is a captivating pilgrimage site in Aigio, Greece. This historic sacred shrine is dedicated to the Theotokos (Mother of God) and is built into a steep cliff, approximately 30 meters high, offering breathtaking views of the sea. The church's origins trace back to the mid-16th century when, according to tradition, a shipwrecked sailor saw a light emanating from a cave. Upon investigation, he discovered a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary within the cave, which translates to 'tripa' in Greek, hence the name Panagia Tripiti. The sailor became the first monk and servant of the Virgin Mary, and the church was built around the cave where the icon was found. The present-day church largely dates back to the 19th century, showcasing neoclassical architecture. A prominent feature is the Renaissance-style marble staircase, constructed in 1870, leading visitors up the cliff to the church. Inside, you'll find the revered icon of the Virgin Mary, 19th-century hagiographies, and intricate wood-carved decorations. A marble fountain at the entrance provides holy water, with a palindrome inscribed: "Wash [the] sins, not only [the] face". Panagia Tripiti is not only a place of worship but also a cultural landmark. Its architecture, serene atmosphere, and the surrounding natural beauty make it a unique destination for both religious pilgrims and tourists alike. Note that as of 2019, the church has been undergoing restoration, with expected completion in 2023. During this time, the icon has been moved to Panagia Faneromeni church in the center of Aigio.
