Discover more about Lefkada Windmills

The Lefkada Windmills are a captivating historical site on the island of Lefkada, Greece. These windmills played a vital role in the island's agricultural development, particularly in grain milling. The construction of the mills began during the Venetian Rule. Historically, there were up to 12 windmills in the area, but only five remain today in the Gyra area and Agios Ioannis, near Lefkada Town. During the Russian occupation of the island from 1800 to 1807, the locals gave Russian names to some of the windmills, such as Orlof, Majikef, and Moskva. The windmills were used to grind grain imported from Russia until the early 20th century. The last active windmill ceased operations in 1954. Today, only the remnants of five windmills remain, with one, the “Orlof” windmill, having been renovated. Visitors can explore the windmills, take leisurely walks, and enjoy panoramic views of the lush landscapes and crystal-clear waters. The windmills are easily accessible, making them a convenient stop for tourists exploring the island. The surrounding area features wildflowers and greenery, enhancing the site's aesthetic appeal.
