Discover more about Archaeological Museum of Pyrgos

The Archaeological Museum of Pyrgos, an emblematic cultural landmark in the capital of Ilia, is a must-see destination for visitors interested in the region's rich history. The museum is located in the heart of Pyrgos, inside a striking neoclassical building designed by the talented German architect Ernst Ziller. Constructed in 1890, the building served as the Municipal Market until the late 1960s before being transformed into the Archaeological Museum, which opened its doors in 2013. The museum's collection comprises approximately 1,700 artifacts from across the Ilia prefecture, dating from the prehistoric period to the post-Byzantine era. Exhibits include finds from ancient Elis, the ancient capital of the Elean state, and major sanctuaries like that of Zeus in Olympia and Apollo Epikourios at Bassae. The museum's exhibits are thematically organized into settlements, religion, people/ideas/objects, allowing visitors to gain a comprehensive understanding of the lives of Ilia's inhabitants throughout history. The right wing of the museum displays artifacts from prehistoric and early historical periods, while the central hall and left wing showcase finds from later historical periods, as well as notable Byzantine and post-Byzantine objects. Highlights include weapons, jewelry, and funerary objects from the Late Bronze Age, as well as coins from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The building itself is an architectural gem, boasting a total area of 3,168 sq. m. and consisting of three levels: a semi-basement, a ground floor with two internal patios, and a floor in its central part. The main exhibition spaces are located on the ground floor, covering approximately 650 sq. m.
