Overview
The Christ of the Deep is an iconic underwater statue located just off the coast of St. George's, Grenada. Erected in 1961, this 12-foot bronze figure depicts Jesus Christ with outstretched arms, symbolizing peace and hope. The statue stands approximately 15 feet below the surface in the Caribbean Sea.The statue serves as a tribute to the local fishermen and divers who lost their lives at sea. It also commemorates the heroic efforts of Grenadians who rescued over 600 passengers and crew from the Italian cruise ship Bianca C, which sank in 1961 after an explosion. The statue is a replica of the Christ of the Abyss, originally placed in the Mediterranean Sea.Today, the Christ of the Deep is a popular site for divers and snorkelers. The clear waters surrounding the statue teem with colorful coral reefs and diverse marine life. Guided diving tours are available for those wanting to explore the site. The statue is part of the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park.
