Fort George, standing proudly on a promontory overlooking the harbor of St. George's, is a landmark steeped in Grenadian history. Originally constructed by the French between 1706 and 1710 and named Fort Royal, it was strategically designed to protect the island from invaders, particularly the British. Its elevated position provided a clear vantage point of the town and coastline.In 1762, the British captured Grenada and renamed the fort in honor of King George III. The British enhanced the fort's defenses and used it as a key military outpost for over two centuries. The fort's architecture reflects classic European fortifications, featuring a parade ground, barracks, guardroom, gunpowder magazine, and cannons.Fort George holds a prominent place in Grenada's more recent history as well. It was the site of the tragic end to the Grenada Revolution in 1983, where Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and members of his cabinet were assassinated, an event that triggered the U.S.-led invasion of Grenada. Today, the fort serves as the headquarters of the Royal Grenada Police Force. Visitors can explore the fort's stone walls, tunnels, and old cannons while enjoying stunning panoramic views of St. George's, the harbor, and the coastline.
