Discover more about Fort George

Fort George, standing 175 feet above St. George's harbor, is a landmark and the oldest fort in Grenada. Originally built by the French in 1705 and named Fort Royal, it was designed by François Blondel to protect the island from invaders. Its strategic location provided a clear view of the harbor and town. In 1762, the British captured Grenada and renamed the fort in honor of King George III. The British enhanced its defenses and used it as a key military outpost for over two centuries. The fort's design, influenced by Vauban-style fortifications, includes bastions that eliminated blind spots, allowing defenders to create interlocking fire zones. Within the fort are barracks, a gunpowder magazine, and artillery platforms, some housing 19th-century cannons gifted by Queen Victoria. Fort George also holds a place in Grenada's more recent history. In 1983, it was the site where Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and members of his cabinet were assassinated, triggering the US-led invasion of Grenada. Today, Fort George serves as the headquarters of the Royal Grenada Police Force, with sections open to the public. Visitors can explore the fort's well-preserved walls, cannons, and tunnels, and enjoy stunning views of St. George's, the harbor, and the coastline.
