Grand Etang Lake: Grenada's Volcanic Jewel

Grand Etang Lake, located in the heart of Grenada, is a captivating natural wonder steeped in history and shrouded in local legends. Formed in the crater of a long-dormant volcano, the lake sits 530 meters (1,740 feet) above sea level and is a central feature of the Grand Etang National Park & Forest Reserve.The lake's volcanic origins, dating back thousands of years, lend an air of mystique to the landscape. The surrounding area is teeming with life, from colorful tropical birds and fish to lizards and playful Mona monkeys. Hiking trails meander through the lush rainforest, offering stunning views of the lake and the towering Mount Qua Qua.According to local folklore, the lake is home to a mermaid who lures unsuspecting men to a watery grave. While mermaid sightings remain unconfirmed, the lake does possess a unique geological network and has been known to bubble when the Kick 'em Jenny underwater volcano is active.Grand Etang has also played a role in Grenada's history. The area was once used as a sacred camp by the indigenous Carib people. Later, in 1796, it was the site of conflict between French and British colonists.
