Discover more about Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park

The Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park in Hagåtña is a tribute to Guam's rich Chamorro heritage. The park's centerpiece is a collection of latte stones, ancient megaliths that served as foundational pillars for Chamorro structures from around 900 CE to the arrival of the Spanish in 1521. These stones, consisting of a base (haligi) and a cap (tasa), are iconic symbols of Chamorro culture and can be found throughout the Mariana Islands. In 1956, the U.S. military relocated the latte stones from the village of Mepo to this site in Hagåtña after the original village was destroyed by military construction following World War II. The park was established in the 1950s to preserve and showcase these significant cultural artifacts. In 2004, the park was renamed in honor of Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos, a Chamorro activist who fought for indigenous rights and the return of ancestral lands. He founded Nasion Chamoru (Chamorro Nation) at this site on July 21, 1991, solidifying the park's importance to the Chamorro sovereignty movement. The park also features caves used by the Japanese during World War II for storage and shelter, adding another layer of historical significance. Visitors can explore these caves, registered on the Guam and National Registers of Historic Places, at their own risk. The park is a key stop on the Hagåtña Heritage Walking Trail, connecting it to other historical sites in the capital. It serves as a gathering place for Chamorro Nation members and a site for cultural events and memorials.
