Fort Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, also known as Fort Soledad, stands as a historical landmark near Umatac on the southwestern coast of Guam. Constructed by the Spanish, likely between 1802 and 1819, it was the fourth and final fort built to safeguard Umatac Bay. This bay served as a crucial anchorage for Spanish galleons traversing the Pacific between Acapulco, Mexico, and the Philippines from 1565 to 1815.Perched atop Mount Chalan Ahiti, also known as the “Path of the Ancestors,” the fort offered a commanding view of the bay and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Its strategic location allowed soldiers to monitor the entrance to Umatac Bay, deterring pirates and protecting the valuable cargo carried by the galleons. With Mexican independence in 1815, the galleon trade route declined, and the fort was eventually abandoned. Over time, treasure hunters damaged the structure, seeking rumored buried fortunes.
