Fort Santa Agueda Travel Guide

Perched atop Apugan Hill in Hagåtña, Fort Santa Agueda stands as a silent sentinel, guarding the memories of Guam's colonial past. Constructed around 1800 by the Spanish, the fort, also known as Fort Apugan, provided a strategic vantage point to monitor the seas and protect the capital from potential invaders. Named in honor of Governor Manuel Muro's wife, María Agueda del Camino, the fort was built using mampostería, a construction technique employing coral stone and lime mortar.Originally armed with ten cannons, Fort Santa Agueda played a crucial role in defending Spanish interests during the era of the Acapulco-Manila galleon trade. The fort's strategic location allowed defenders to safeguard the Governor's Palace and Fort San Rafael from hillside attacks. Over the years, the fort witnessed various transformations, serving as a signal station for American ships in the early 20th century and a gun emplacement for Japanese forces during World War II.Today, only remnants of the original fort remain, including a raised viewing platform offering stunning panoramic views.
