    Discover more about Piti Guns

Nestled in the hills above Piti village, the Piti Guns are a poignant reminder of Guam's strategic importance during World War II. These three Vickers-type Model 3 140-millimeter coastal defense guns were manufactured in 1914 and installed by the Japanese in 1944 as part of their efforts to fortify the island against American forces. The Chamorro people were forced to work in building up these defenses.Strategically positioned to defend Asan Beach and Apra Harbor, the guns had a range of approximately 10 miles, intended to target ships and landing craft. However, they were never fired in combat. American forces landed on July 21, 1944, and quickly captured the area by July 22, finding the guns not fully operational. Today, the Piti Guns stand as silent witnesses to the past, offering visitors a chance to reflect on the events that shaped Guam's history. The site is located within the War in the Pacific National Historical Park, with a short, steep trail leading to the guns. The surrounding mahogany forest, planted in 1928 as part of an agricultural experiment, adds to the serene atmosphere. One of the guns was toppled by a falling tree after the war. From the site, you can enjoy panoramic views of Apra Harbor and the coastline, making it a worthwhile visit for history buffs and nature lovers alike.
