Discover more about Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park

The Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park, located in Guam's capital city of Hagåtña, is a tribute to both ancient Chamorro heritage and modern Chamorro activism. The park's centerpiece is a collection of latte stones, megalithic monuments consisting of a base (haligi) and a cap (tasa). These stones were used by the Chamorro people as structural supports for buildings, likely for homes, canoe houses, or food storage, from around 900 CE until the arrival of the Spanish in 1521. In 1956, these particular latte stones were relocated from the village of Mepo to Hagåtña after the original site was destroyed by military construction following World War II. Today, the stones stand as prominent symbols of Chamorro identity and resilience. The park provides an easily accessible destination to learn about Guam's ancient history. The park is also named in honor of the late Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos, a champion of Chamorro rights. Senator Santos was a veteran, legislator, and advocate for social justice for the indigenous Chamorro people. He frequently visited the park for inspiration and guidance. In 2003, the park was renamed to commemorate his contributions. In addition to the latte stones, the park also features caves that were constructed during the Japanese occupation of Guam from 1941 to 1944. These caves, built with forced labor, served as storage areas and bomb shelters. Visitors are cautioned to enter at their own risk.
