Discover more about Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park

The Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park, located in the heart of Hagåtña, Guam, is a tribute to the island's ancient Chamorro heritage. The park's centerpiece is a collection of eight latte stones, iconic megaliths that served as foundational supports for ancient Chamorro structures dating back to around 900 CE. These goblet-shaped stones, consisting of a pillar (haligi) and a capital (tasa), are unique to the Mariana Islands and symbolize Chamorro cultural identity. Originally located in the village of Mepo', the latte stones were moved to this site to create a park showcasing Guam's history. In 2004, the park was renamed to honor Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos, a Chamorro activist who dedicated his life to advocating for Chamorro rights and self-determination. The park was a significant place for Santos, who felt a strong connection to the stones and founded the Nasion Chamoru (Chamorro Nation) here in 1991, a grassroots organization that became central to the Chamorro sovereignty movement. Today, the park offers visitors a peaceful setting to reflect on Guam's history and culture. Informative plaques detail the history and significance of the latte stones, offering insights into the Chamorro way of life. The park also hosts cultural events, showcasing traditional music, dance, and art. The park provides amenities such as benches, a gazebo, and restrooms.
