Discover more about Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park

The Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park, located in Hagåtña, Guam, is a significant cultural and historical site. The park's centerpiece is a collection of eight latte stones, which are ancient limestone pillars consisting of a base (haligi) and a cap (tasa). These stones were used as foundational supports for traditional Chamorro structures from around 900 CE until the arrival of the Spanish in 1521. The latte stones on display were relocated to the park in 1956 from the village of Mepo, after the original site was destroyed during World War II. The park is named in honor of the late Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos, a Chamorro activist who dedicated his life to advocating for Chamorro rights and social justice. Senator Santos frequently visited the park for reflection and in 1991, he founded Nasion Chamoru (Chamorro Nation) at this site, a grassroots organization that became central to the Chamorro sovereignty movement. In addition to the latte stones, the park also features caves that were used by the Japanese during their occupation of Guam from 1941 to 1944. These caves, constructed with forced labor, served as storage areas and bomb shelters. The park serves as a gathering place for cultural events and ceremonies, honoring the Chamorro heritage. Visitors can explore the grounds, learn about the history and significance of the latte stones, and appreciate the serene atmosphere. The park is open 24 hours a day and is included as one of the seventeen sites in the Hagåtña Heritage Walking Trail.
