Discover more about Sitio Arqueológico Iximche

Iximché, meaning "maize tree" in the K'iche' Maya language, is a captivating archaeological site located near Tecpán, Guatemala. Founded in 1470, it served as the capital of the Kaqchikel Maya kingdom until its abandonment in 1524. The city was strategically built on a plateau surrounded by deep ravines, offering a natural defense. Iximché is divided into four main groups of structures, including temples, palaces, and altars. The site features six plazas and over 170 structures set on a northwest/southeast axis. Visitors can explore the remains of pyramid-temples, Mesoamerican ball courts, and residential areas. The architecture showcases the ingenuity of the Kaqchikel Maya, with remnants of painted murals adorning some structures. After the Spanish arrival in 1524, Iximché briefly became the first Spanish capital of Guatemala. However, the Kaqchikel kings were eventually deceived, and the city was burned by the Spanish. Today, Iximché remains a sacred place for the Maya people, who continue to perform traditional ceremonies and rituals at the site. The site has a small museum with artifacts found during excavations, including sculptures and ceramics.
