Museo Miraflores offers a captivating journey into Guatemala's Mayan past, focusing on the archaeological finds from Kaminaljuyu, a pre-Columbian city that once thrived in the area where the museum stands today. Established in 2002, the museum is dedicated to preserving and exhibiting artifacts that shed light on the daily life, rituals, and artistic achievements of the Mayan people who inhabited this region for over 2,000 years.The museum's collection includes approximately 500 artifacts, most of which were excavated from Kaminaljuyu between 1994 and 1996. Visitors can admire pottery, jewelry, sculptures, and obsidian objects, gaining insights into Mayan craftsmanship and their sophisticated understanding of art and science. Not all artifacts are local to the immediate area, with some originating from other pre-Columbian sites that had contact with Kaminaljuyu. Among the notable items are a mosaic mask consisting of 19 jade pieces and a sculpted stone atlante.The museum itself is housed in a modern, LEED-certified building that offers panoramic views of Guatemala City and the surrounding volcanoes. The entrance hall features a map of the ancient city overlaid with the modern streets of Guatemala City, providing a unique perspective on the area's historical transformation. The museum also has a permanent exhibition hall, a temporary exhibition hall, and a mezzanine displaying archaeological photographs. Within the museum grounds, three preserved mounds offer a tangible connection to the ancient city.Beyond its exhibits, Museo Miraflores serves as a cultural hub, hosting workshops, conferences, and courses. It also features a shop and cafeteria for visitors' convenience. The museum is located adjacent to a shopping mall with secure parking, making it easily accessible.
