Discover more about San José Cathedral Antigua

Located on the east side of Antigua's Central Park, the San José Cathedral is a captivating landmark that embodies the city's rich history and enduring spirit. The cathedral's story began in 1545, when construction first started, using rubble from a destroyed settlement in the Almolonga Valley. However, frequent earthquakes hampered its completion. The original structure was poorly constructed, using mud bricks and thatch. Despite funds from the Crown, it was anything but majestic. In 1669, the original cathedral was demolished due to being in a constant state of disrepair from earthquakes. A new cathedral, designed by José de Porres and Juan Pascual, was inaugurated in 1680. This grand structure boasted five naves, eighteen chapels, and a vast dome, making it the most luxurious cathedral in Central America. Its façade was adorned with curved ornaments and fifteen images. The Santa Marta earthquake of 1773 caused serious damage, leading to its abandonment when the capital moved to Guatemala City. In the early 1800s, the ruins were partially restored, and the Parish of San José was moved into a section of the old cathedral. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the original cathedral, including the crypt and a network of tunnels. The current church functions as a parish, with regular religious services. The ruins are open to the public and contain tombs of notable figures from the Conquest of Guatemala.
