Overview
Antigua Guatemala, often simply called Antigua, is a city steeped in history and surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. Founded in 1543, it served as the capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala for over two centuries, a region encompassing most of Central America and parts of southern Mexico. The city's layout, inspired by the Italian Renaissance, features a grid pattern centered around a main plaza, a design that has been maintained since 1543.Antigua's rich history is marked by both prosperity and adversity. The city was initially founded in 1524 at Iximche, but after an indigenous uprising, it was moved and then destroyed by a lahar from Volcán de Agua in 1541. Re-established in the Panchoy Valley in 1543, it flourished for centuries until the devastating Santa Marta earthquakes of 1773 prompted the capital's relocation to present-day Guatemala City. Despite this, Antigua retained its charm, and many residents remained, preserving its historical character.Today, Antigua is celebrated for its stunning colonial architecture, much of which dates back to the Baroque period. The city's iconic landmarks include the Santa Catalina Arch, the Antigua Guatemala Cathedral, and the Palace of the Captains General. Visitors can explore numerous colonial ruins, such as La Merced Church and the Capuchinas Convent, each telling a story of the city's past. The city is surrounded by volcanoes, offering incredible views and hiking opportunities. The most popular hikes are the Pacaya Volcano hike and the Acatenango Volcano trek.Beyond its historical and natural attractions, Antigua offers a vibrant cultural scene. The city is known for its handicrafts, including traditional weavings, ceramics, and silver and gold products. Visitors can explore local markets, sample Guatemalan coffee, and immerse themselves in the city's traditions. Antigua's blend of history, culture, and natural beauty makes it a must-see destination in Central America.
