The Iglesia y Convento de las Capuchinas, or Church and Convent of the Capuchins, stands as a captivating landmark in Antigua, Guatemala. Inaugurated in 1736, it was founded by five Capuchin nuns from Madrid and designed by architect Diego de Porres. The complex provided a unique religious life for women, allowing even those without dowries to join the order.The convent's architecture showcases a blend of Spanish colonial and Moorish styles. Notably, the church features intricate stonework, while the overall structure is considered one of the first apartment buildings in America due to its room design. The design incorporates a panopticon structure, allowing for complete observation of the interior from a central point.However, the convent's history was relatively short-lived. Severely damaged by the Santa Marta earthquakes in 1773, it was abandoned by the nuns and fell into disrepair. Restoration efforts began in 1943, and today, visitors can explore the ruins, including the unique "Tower of Solitude" with its circular arrangement of nuns' cells, serene courtyards, and a small museum with religious artifacts.
