Tanque La Unión: A Colonial Wash House

Tanque La Unión, located on 6a Calle Oriente, is one of Antigua's most iconic and unique landmarks. Constructed in 1853, it was initially known as Plaza de San José, but its name was changed to Tanque de la Unión (Union Tank) in honor of the Federation of United Provinces of Central America. This historical public washbasin, or *lavadero*, served as a communal laundry area where local women gathered to wash clothes and socialize.The structure features a large rectangular water tank with stone basins, allowing multiple women to wash clothes simultaneously. Its striking yellow and red architecture contrasts beautifully with Antigua's colonial streets and the backdrop of nearby volcanoes. Although no longer used for laundry, Tanque La Unión remains a beloved historical site where locals and tourists gather to take photos and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.The site suffered damage in the 1976 earthquake but was restored in 1979, preserving its neoclassical style. Today, surrounded by palm trees and greenery, it symbolizes Antigua's identity, blending history, culture, and tradition. Tanque La Unión offers visitors a tranquil escape and a connection to the city's rich cultural heritage. It also appears in Semana Santa (Holy Week) processions, enhancing the spiritual and cultural depth of the celebrations.
