San José Cathedral: A Testament to Antigua's Enduring Spirit

Explore the resilient San José Cathedral in Antigua, where history and faith converge amidst stunning Baroque architecture and earthquake-worn ruins.

4.7

Located on the east side of Antigua's Central Plaza, the San José Cathedral is both a functioning parish and a historical monument. The first cathedral was built in 1545, but was poorly constructed and suffered damage from earthquakes. A new cathedral, designed in the Baroque style by José de Porres and Juan Pascual, was inaugurated in 1680. It was considered the most beautiful and luxurious cathedral in Central America, boasting five naves, 18 side chapels, and a stunning facade adorned with curved ornaments and statues. However, the Santa Marta earthquake of 1773 caused significant damage, leading to the relocation of the capital to Guatemala City. The cathedral was partially restored in the mid-1800s, with the entrance, baptistery, and two chapels being rebuilt. Today, the Parish of San José operates in these restored sections, while the remaining ruins are open to visitors. Visitors can explore the ruins, including the crypts beneath the church, which are still used for Mayan rituals. The cathedral also holds historical and religious significance, with tombs of notable figures from the Conquest of Guatemala, such as Bishop Francisco Marroquín and Pedro de Alvarado, located in one of its crypts. The ruins offer a glimpse into the cathedral's past grandeur, with broken arches, hefty pillars, and a great cupola open to the sky.
