Discover more about Tintal

El Tintal, located 25 kilometers northeast of Carmelita in the northern Petén region of Guatemala, is a captivating Maya archaeological site. This once-great city, dating back to the Preclassic and Classic periods (300 BC – AD 900), sprawls across 11.6 square kilometers and contains over 2,000 identified structures. It stands as one of the largest sites in the Mirador Basin, second only to El Mirador itself. El Tintal boasts monumental architecture, including impressive triadic pyramids, ceremonial structures, and wide causeways that once linked it to other major cities like El Mirador and Nakbé. The scale of construction, featuring pyramids reaching up to 50 meters high, indicates a significant labor investment and advanced engineering. A defensive moat encircling the city's epicenter further highlights its historical importance. Archaeological investigations have revealed that El Tintal was a major urban center during the Middle and Late Preclassic periods. The city's strategic location near swamps provided a vital water source for its inhabitants. Discoveries include Stela 01, a Preclassic stela carved from red sandstone, and a royal tomb from the Early Classic Period. Although the site was known to archaeologists for decades, systematic excavations only began in 2004, revealing the city's complex history and its role in the broader Maya civilization.
