Biotopo Protegido San Miguel La Palotada El Zotz, also known as El Zotz (“bat” in Mayan), is a captivating destination in the Petén region of Guatemala, approximately 30 km west of Tikal. This protected area combines natural beauty with cultural significance, offering visitors a unique experience. The biotope spans 49,500 hectares of subtropical humid forest, lagoons, and swamps, bordering Tikal National Park to the east. It's home to diverse wildlife, including jaguars, pumas, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, crocodiles, and around 36 species of bats. Birdwatchers can spot numerous species, including the resplendent quetzal. The El Zotz archaeological site features temples like “El Diablo” (45 m) and stelae related to the Mayan kingdom's history. The site was originally named Pa'ka'n, meaning "Divided Sky". From the main temple, you can see the Tikal Temple IV. The area has caves and swamps and is known for the thousands of bats that fly out from under the cliffs at sunset. Visitors can hike trails, explore Mayan ruins, and observe wildlife. The best time to visit is during the dry season (December to April).
