Discover more about Cenotes de Candelaria

The Cenotes de Candelaria are a pair of mesmerizing sinkholes located in the remote municipality of Nentón, in Guatemala's Huehuetenango department. These cenotes, or natural sinkholes, are formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock, revealing stunning turquoise waters. Unlike underground cenotes, these are above ground, resembling blue holes embraced by the surrounding landscape. Cenote de Candelaria 1 is the smaller and shallower of the two, with a depth of approximately 42 feet (13 meters). Several steep trails lead down to the sinkhole's edge, where large boulders provide an ideal spot for a picnic. The crystal-clear water invites visitors to swim and snorkel, offering an underwater view of cichlid fish and submerged roots. A short drive further along the dirt road leads to Cenote de Candelaria 2, which is larger and deeper, reaching depths of at least 165 feet (50 meters). Wooden stairways descend to the water's edge, where a floating dock and underwater rock ledge provide access for swimmers. The water's color and clarity can vary with the seasons, adding to the cenote's mystique. The journey to the Cenotes de Candelaria is an adventure in itself, with the road winding through the Cuchumatanes Mountain Range and vast prairies. The area is ideal for camping, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the tranquility and natural beauty of this hidden gem.
