Plaza of the Seven Temples: A Glimpse into Tikal's Past

The Plaza of the Seven Temples is an intriguing architectural complex within the Tikal National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Guatemala. This plaza is located south of Temple III and west of the South Acropolis, approximately 300 meters southwest of the Great Plaza. Its name derives from the row of seven small, near-identical temples that line the east side of the patio. The central temple is slightly larger than the others. The plaza's history stretches back to the Preclassic period, with early construction dating between 650 and 550 BC. The layout includes a palace complex on the south side, and the remains of a triple ballcourt on the north. The west side is bordered by the rear of an E-Group complex, an astronomical observatory common in Maya cities. Archaeological evidence reveals that the plaza was occupied as early as 400-200 BC. The seven temples themselves were constructed during the Late Classic Period (600-900 AD), marking a significant phase in the plaza's development. The temples are aligned along the east side of the patio. The North Patio is the area immediately north of the triple ballcourt. The East Patio is the area immediately behind the seven temples and is actually the western terrace of the South Acropolis. The South Patio is the zone to the south of the southern palace. While not as imposing as the towering pyramids of the Great Plaza, the Plaza of the Seven Temples offers a unique perspective on Tikal's evolution and the diverse architectural styles employed by the Maya civilization.
