Car
If you're traveling by car from central Verapaces, start by heading northwest on the main road (CA-9) towards the town of Cobán. Continue on CA-9 for approximately 30 kilometers until you reach the junction for the road leading to the village of San Juan Chamelco. Turn left onto this road and follow it for about 7 kilometers. Look for signs directing you to 'Crater Azul' and turn right onto a smaller access road that leads to the parking area near the crater. Ensure your vehicle is suitable for unpaved roads, as the last stretch may be rough.
Public Transportation
To reach Crater Azul via public transportation, start at the central bus terminal in Cobán. Look for a bus heading to San Juan Chamelco or nearby villages. The fare is typically around 10-15 Quetzales. Inform the driver of your destination, and they will drop you off at the nearest point to the crater. From there, you may need to walk approximately 2 kilometers along the dirt road to reach the crater entrance. Be prepared for a bit of a hike!
Taxi or Rideshare
For a more direct route without driving yourself, consider hiring a taxi or using a rideshare service from Cobán. The cost is usually around 150-200 Quetzales for the trip to Crater Azul, depending on your negotiation skills and the service you choose. Make sure to confirm the return trip with the driver, as public transportation options may be limited in the area.
Hiking
If you're adventurous and enjoy hiking, you can also reach Crater Azul by trekking from San Juan Chamelco. Start your hike from the village, which is about 7 kilometers away. The trail may be challenging, so be sure to bring appropriate footwear and sufficient water. This option provides an excellent opportunity to experience the local flora and fauna while making your way to the crater.
