Getting There

  • Car

    If you are driving from the center of Centre, head northeast on Route Nationale #1 towards the town of Cap-Haïtien. Follow the signs for Cap-Haïtien. After about 25 kilometers, you will see signs for Laferriere Citadel. Turn left onto the road leading up to the citadel. The road is steep and winding, so drive carefully. Once you reach the parking area, there will be a small fee for parking, typically around 100 HTG.

  • Public Transportation

    To reach Laferriere Citadel via public transportation, take a 'tap-tap' (shared taxi) from Centre to Cap-Haïtien. Make sure to ask the driver to drop you off near the turn-off for Laferriere Citadel. The fare for the tap-tap is usually around 50 HTG. From there, you may need to catch a motorcycle taxi to take you up the steep road to the citadel. The motorcycle taxi fare should be around 200-300 HTG. Be prepared for a thrilling ride as the road can be quite steep!

  • Walking

    If you prefer to walk, it is possible to hike from the nearest point where public transportation drops you off. However, this is not recommended for those not in good physical condition, as the hike can be strenuous. From the drop-off point, follow the signs leading to the citadel, which is about a 2-3 kilometer uphill trek. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water.
