Awesome Day in Eger and Wine Tasting

We had an outstanding full-day private tour with Gergely during our visit to Hungary. He is incredibly knowledgeable about Hungarian history and brought the story of Eger Castle and the city’s heroic defense to life. His English was excellent, and he paced the day perfectly despite temperatures approaching 100°F. One of the unexpected highlights was lunch at a local restaurant, where Gergely encouraged us to try Hungary’s traditional cold strawberry soup. As a food scientist, I found it fascinating. It was light, refreshing, and absolutely perfect on such an incredibly hot day. It’s something we never would have discovered on our own. After exploring historic Eger, Gergely took us to the Valley of the Beautiful Women, where we enjoyed two excellent wine tastings. He introduced us to outstanding local wineries and helped us discover wines that offer exceptional quality and value compared with what we’re accustomed to in California. We came home with several bottles of Egri Bikavér and Egri Csillag that will always remind us of this special day. Gergely was friendly, professional, flexible, and genuinely passionate about sharing his country.
