Awesome Day in Eger and Wine Tasting

We had an outstanding full-day private tour with Gergely during our visit to Hungary. He is incredibly knowledgeable about Hungarian history and brought the story of Eger Castle and the city’s heroic defense to life. His English was excellent, and he paced the day perfectly despite temperatures approaching 100°F. One of the unexpected highlights was lunch at a local restaurant, where Gergely encouraged us to try Hungary’s traditional cold strawberry soup. As a food scientist, I found it fascinating. It was light, refreshing, and absolutely perfect on such an incredibly hot day. It’s something we never would have discovered on our own. After exploring historic Eger, Gergely took us to the Valley of the Beautiful Women, where we enjoyed two excellent wine tastings. He introduced us to outstanding local wineries and helped us discover wines that offer exceptional quality and value compared with what we’re accustomed to in California. We came home with several bottles of Egri Bikavér and Egri Csillag that will always remind us of this special day. Gergely was friendly, professional, flexible, and genuinely passionate about sharing his country. Our Guide Gary and Driver Andrew were simply the best. They took us to everything we wanted to see prior to wine tasting. This trip was not about how many wineries we could visit, but about going to the best winery and having a private lunch there and enjoying all of their great wines.

Our tour guide, Stephen (the tall man) was the perfect guide for our group of 4. He picked us up in a beautiful luxury van (with a very professional driver) exactly on time in front of our apartment. We then drove to Eger and enjoyed the most glorious day of food and wine I’ve ever experienced. We tasted 12 different wines and had lunch at a Michelin starred restaurant. The variety of wines was outstanding and tasty! The food was absolutely exquisite. Stephen was very professional, friendly and fun. As the day progressed and the wines flowed, our group got sillier and Stephen kept up with the flow of the day while keeping us engaged and answering all of our questions.
