History of Belvaros

Before the Modern City

Szeged’s central area developed on higher ground beside the Tisza, within a settlement whose life was shaped by waterways, trade and periodic flooding. Medieval Szeged grew around churches, civic buildings and commercial routes, although the modern appearance of Belváros largely conceals that earlier urban fabric. The river supported movement and commerce, while the surrounding lowlands made flood control a persistent concern. Over time, the central zone became the city’s principal location for administration, religious institutions, markets and trade, establishing the civic role it retains today.

The Flood of 1879

On 12 March 1879, an exceptional flood devastated Szeged, destroying most of the built-up city and displacing its population. The catastrophe transformed the centre rather than merely damaging it: reconstruction introduced a more regular street plan, wider routes and a protective embankment system. International and domestic assistance helped finance the rebuilding, while new public buildings expressed the city’s determination to recover. Many of Belváros’s broad squares, avenues and surviving late nineteenth-century structures are directly connected with this post-flood transformation.

A New Civic and Cultural Centre

The decades after the flood brought a concentration of civic, educational and cultural buildings into central Szeged. Széchenyi tér became an important formal urban space, while Kárász utca and the surrounding streets developed as commercial and pedestrian routes. The period also produced distinctive architecture, including the New Synagogue, completed in 1903, and the Reök Palace, completed in 1907. These buildings reflect the prosperity, artistic confidence and expanding institutional life of the rebuilt city, with Hungarian historicist and Secession styles appearing close together.

University Life and Contemporary Belváros

The University of Szeged has helped maintain Belváros as an academic and cultural centre, particularly around Dugonics tér and Dóm tér. The university’s presence supports cafés, bookshops, performances and a youthful evening economy, while the central squares continue to host civic gatherings and festivals. Twentieth-century changes altered the use of many buildings, yet the district’s basic identity remained tied to public institutions, religious architecture, commerce and the Tisza.
