Szeged developed at an important meeting point of the Tisza and Maros rivers, and the central area grew around the town’s medieval religious, commercial and administrative core. Its position supported trade, fishing, salt transport and connections across the southern Hungarian plain. The modern Belváros does not preserve a continuous medieval townscape, but the cathedral area, the street pattern around the inner centre and surviving historic institutions reflect the long importance of this riverside settlement. The nearby medieval castle, later replaced and transformed through successive periods, also helped define the centre’s civic role.

Szeged came under Ottoman administration in the sixteenth century and was retaken by Habsburg forces in 1686. The following centuries brought administrative reorganisation, rebuilding and the gradual transformation of the central area into a more regular civic and commercial town. Religious institutions and market activity remained important, while the Tisza continued to shape the city’s economy and risks. Much of the architectural fabric associated with present-day Belváros, however, belongs to the nineteenth century or later rather than to the Ottoman period.

The great Tisza flood of March 1879 destroyed or severely damaged most of Szeged, including the historic centre. The disaster prompted an internationally supported reconstruction programme that introduced a ring of boulevards, radial streets and enlarged public spaces. Belváros acquired much of its characteristic civic scale during this rebuilding, with substantial public buildings and apartment houses replacing the vulnerable pre-flood fabric. The city’s central avenues, squares and many of its historicist façades therefore represent not only urban ambition but also a carefully planned response to catastrophe.

Around the turn of the twentieth century, Belváros gained the buildings that now give Szeged much of its architectural identity. The Town Hall, New Synagogue, Reök Palace, National Theatre and the Votive Church belong to a period of institutional expansion and architectural experimentation. Dóm tér was formed as part of the cathedral project and later became closely linked with the University of Szeged and the Szeged Open-Air Festival, founded in 1931. These institutions established the centre as a regional focus for education, performance and public ceremony.

During the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, parts of the centre were progressively adapted for pedestrians, cafés, cultural events and everyday urban life. Kárász utca and Klauzál tér became especially important public spaces, while restoration projects renewed historic façades and interiors. Belváros now combines university life, municipal administration, tourism, retail and riverside recreation. Its identity remains tied to the post-flood city, but current life is shaped by the movement of students, residents, shoppers and theatre-goers through the same squares and streets.
