History of Szent Istvan ter

Felsőváros Before the Modern Square

Szent István tér belongs to Felsőváros, historically Szeged’s Upper Town, an area shaped by homes, parish institutions, small-scale commerce and its proximity to the Tisza. Its development cannot be separated from the river: flooding repeatedly affected the city’s layout, building practices and public works.
