Car
If you are traveling by car, make your way towards Thingvellir from your current location in Eastern Region. Hestagjá is located about 50 km from the nearest major town, Selfoss. Take Route 1 (the Ring Road) heading west from Selfoss. After approximately 35 km, take the exit towards Route 36 (Þingvallavegur) towards Þingvellir National Park. Continue on Route 36 for about 15 km, following the signs for Þingvellir. When you reach the park entrance, you may need to pay a parking fee of around 600 ISK. After parking, walk towards the marked trails leading to Hestagjá, which is about a 20-minute walk from the parking area.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, check the schedules for bus services that run from towns such as Egilsstaðir or Akureyri to Þingvellir National Park. Companies like Strætó offer routes that can take you close to the park. From the bus stop near the park entrance, you will need to walk approximately 2 km to reach Hestagjá. Make sure to confirm the bus schedules in advance, as services may not be frequent. Additionally, be prepared to pay around 1,500 ISK for a one-way bus ticket.
