Car
If you're traveling by car, start from Egilsstaðir, the largest town in the Eastern Region. Take Route 1 (the Ring Road) heading north for about 30 kilometers. Look for the sign directing you to Möðrudalsleið (Road 66) and turn left onto this road. Continue on Möðrudalsleið for approximately 28 kilometers. You will pass through stunning landscapes before reaching the Iceland Desert area, which is located near the coordinates 65.3416641, -15.7615935. Be cautious of road conditions, especially during winter months.
Bus
For those using public transportation, take the bus from Egilsstaðir to the nearest bus stop along Route 1, as there are no direct buses to Iceland Desert. You can check with local bus providers like Strætó for schedules. Once you reach the nearest stop, you will need to arrange for a taxi to take you to Möðrudalsleið. Taxis are available in Egilsstaðir; however, it is advisable to book in advance to ensure availability. The taxi ride from the nearest bus stop to the Iceland Desert will cost approximately 10,000 ISK to 15,000 ISK depending on the distance.
Guided Tour
Consider joining a guided tour that includes Iceland Desert in its itinerary. Many local tour companies operate from Egilsstaðir and offer excursions into the desert area. This option provides not only transportation but also insights from knowledgeable guides. Prices for guided tours vary, typically starting around 15,000 ISK per person, depending on the length and inclusions of the tour.
