Car
If you are traveling by car from the town of Egilsstaðir, take Route 1 (the Ring Road) heading west. Continue on Route 1 for approximately 250 kilometers (around 3 hours). As you approach Skaftafell, look for the signs directing you towards Skaftafell National Park. The entrance to the park is well-marked, and there is a parking area available for visitors. Note that there is a parking fee of approximately 1,500 ISK for a day of parking.
Public Transportation
To reach Skaftafell using public transportation, take a bus from Egilsstaðir to Höfn. From Höfn, you can catch a local bus to Skaftafell. The bus service is operated by Strætó and runs several times a day, but be sure to check the timetable in advance as it can vary. The total journey may take around 5-6 hours, and the fare will be approximately 4,000 ISK from Egilsstaðir to Höfn and an additional 1,500 ISK from Höfn to Skaftafell. Make sure to check the most current schedules and routes on the Strætó website.
Taxi or Ride-Sharing
For a more direct route, consider hiring a taxi or using a ride-sharing service from Egilsstaðir or Höfn to Skaftafell. While this option is more expensive, it provides a convenient and flexible way to reach your destination. The fare will vary depending on the distance and time of day, but expect to pay around 30,000 ISK or more for a one-way trip from Egilsstaðir to Skaftafell.
