Car
If you're driving to Hengifoss, start by heading towards the town of Egilsstaðir. From Egilsstaðir, take Route 1 (the Ring Road) heading east. After about 28 kilometers, look for a sign directing you to Route 931 towards Hengifoss. Turn onto Route 931, and follow it for approximately 7 kilometers. You will reach the parking area for Hengifoss, which is well-marked. There is no fee for parking.
Public Transportation
To reach Hengifoss using public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavik to Egilsstaðir. Several bus companies provide this service; check schedules in advance as they may vary. Once in Egilsstaðir, you can either arrange for a taxi or check local tour operators that offer trips to Hengifoss. Note that public transport options may be limited, so plan accordingly. Taxis may charge around 15,000 ISK (approximately 110 USD) for a round trip to Hengifoss from Egilsstaðir.
Hiking
From the parking area, follow the marked hiking trail towards Hengifoss. The hike is approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) one way and takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your pace. The trail is well-maintained and offers stunning views, including another waterfall, Litlanesfoss, along the way. Ensure you wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring water, as there are no facilities on the trail.
