Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car, start from the nearest town, which is likely Hella or Landmannalaugar. From Hella, take Route 26 towards Þingvellir, and then switch to Route 32. Follow Route 32 until you reach Route 1. Continue on Route 1 until you see signs for Landmannalaugar. Take Route 208, which is a gravel road that leads you directly into the highlands. Make sure to have a 4x4 vehicle, as the roads may be rough. Follow Route 208 until you reach the designated parking area near Laugahraun. This drive offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes, especially as you approach the highlands.

• Public Transportation

  For those relying on public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavik to Hella or Landmannalaugar. The bus service is usually operated by companies like Reykjavik Excursions or Sterna. Once you arrive at Hella or Landmannalaugar, you can either join a guided tour that will take you to Laugahraun or find local shuttle services that operate in the highlands region. It’s advisable to check the schedule in advance as these services may not run frequently. Be prepared for potential costs ranging from ISK 8,000 to ISK 15,000 depending on your starting point and the service you choose.

• Hiking

  If you're feeling adventurous, and already in the vicinity of Landmannalaugar, you can hike to Laugahraun. The hike is approximately 4-5 kilometers one way and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your pace. Start your hike from the Landmannalaugar campsite, following the marked trails that lead towards Laugahraun. The path will take you through diverse lava fields and stunning landscapes.
