Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the main town of Þórsmörk, which is a common base for hikers on the Laugavegur Trail. Drive towards Route 1 (the Ring Road) and then turn onto Route 26 towards Hvolsvöllur. Follow Route 26 until you reach the intersection with Route 32, then take Route 32 towards Þjórsá River. Continue on Route 32 until you reach Route 1 again. From here, take Route 26 to Þjórsárdalur Valley. The waterfall is accessible via a short hike from the road. Look for signs indicating the trailhead to Raudufossar. Note that a 4x4 vehicle is recommended due to rough terrain.
Public Transportation
Public transportation options are limited, but you can take a bus from Reykjavík to Hvolsvöllur, which is the closest town to the trailhead. From Hvolsvöllur, you may need to arrange a shuttle or taxi to take you to the Þjórsárdalur Valley. Once you arrive at the valley, follow the marked paths leading to Raudufossar. Ensure to check bus schedules in advance as they may not run frequently, especially during off-peak seasons.
Hiking
If you're already hiking the Laugavegur Trail, you can take a detour to reach Raudufossar. While on the trail, look for junctions that lead towards Þjórsárdalur. The hike to the waterfall will take approximately 2-3 hours from the main trail, depending on your pace. Ensure you have proper hiking gear and water, as this part of the trail may be less traveled.
