Car
From Reykjavik, take the Ring Road (Route 1) heading east. After approximately 30 km, take the exit towards Route 30. Continue on Route 30 until you reach the intersection with Route 1 at Hella. Continue east on Route 1 until you reach Egilsstaðir. From Egilsstaðir, follow Route 93 north towards Brekka. When you reach Brekka, look for signs directing you to Hengifoss. The last part of the journey will involve a short drive up to the Hengifoss parking area, where you can park your car.
Public Transportation
Take a bus from Reykjavik to Egilsstaðir. Buses are operated by various companies, including Sterna and Strætó. Once you arrive in Egilsstaðir, you will need to take a taxi or arrange for local transportation to reach Brekka. There are no direct public transport options to Hengifoss from Egilsstaðir, so hiring a taxi is recommended. Make sure to confirm the fare beforehand, as it may vary.
Hiking
From the Hengifoss parking area, follow the marked hiking trail towards the waterfall. The trail is approximately 2.5 km one way and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The hike takes about 1.5 hours to reach the waterfall, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Please note that the trail may be steep in parts, and it is advisable to check the weather conditions before you set out.
