Car
If you're traveling by car, start from the nearest major road, Route 1 (the Ring Road). Drive towards Route 518. From Route 1, take the exit onto Route 518 towards Húsafell. Follow Route 518 for approximately 30 kilometers. You will reach a sign for Surtshellir Cave, located approximately 10 minutes into the highlands. The cave is well-marked and you can park your car in the designated area nearby.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavik to Borgarnes. From Borgarnes, you will need to transfer to a smaller bus service that operates routes to the highlands, such as the 'Sterna' or 'Strætó' services. Be sure to check the schedule in advance, as services may be limited. Once you arrive near Húsafell, you will need to hike approximately 2 kilometers to reach Surtshellir, following the signs. Note that it is recommended to check bus timings as they may vary by season.
Hiking
If you are already in the highlands and prefer to hike, you can approach Surtshellir from nearby trails. The most common route starts from the Húsafell area. Follow the marked trails leading towards the cave, which is approximately 5 kilometers away. Ensure you have proper hiking gear and check the weather conditions, as the terrain can be rugged.
