Getting There
Car
If you are traveling by car, start by driving on Route 1 (also known as the Ring Road) towards the town of Akranes. After approximately 30 kilometers, take the exit onto Route 47 towards Borgarnes. Continue on Route 47 for about 34 kilometers until you reach the junction with Route 1 again. Follow Route 1 for about 12 kilometers, then turn left onto Route 54 towards Þingvellir. After about 12 kilometers, look for a sign to Glymur Waterfall on your left. Follow the gravel road for about 3 kilometers until you reach the parking area. Please note that there may be a small parking fee, so have some Icelandic króna (ISK) ready.
Public Transportation
To reach Glymur Waterfall via public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavik to Borgarnes. The bus departs from the main bus terminal and the trip takes approximately 1.5 hours. Once you arrive in Borgarnes, you will need to take a taxi to the trailhead of Glymur Waterfall, as public transport does not reach the waterfall directly. Taxis can be booked in advance or found at the bus station. The taxi ride will take about 30 minutes and may cost around 10,000 ISK. Ensure you plan your return trip in advance, as taxi services may be limited in the area.
Hiking
From the parking area, the hike to Glymur Waterfall is approximately 3 kilometers one way and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the waterfall. The trail is well-marked but can be steep and rocky in parts, so wear sturdy hiking shoes. Be sure to bring water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the trail.
