History of Gold Coast

From North Division to Elite Enclave

Before its transformation into an affluent residential district, the area north of the Chicago River was part of the developing North Side, with roads, scattered settlement and expanding urban infrastructure. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 accelerated Chicago's growth northwards and encouraged wealthy households to seek larger, less industrial surroundings away from the central business district. The lakefront setting, proximity to established North Side routes and improving transport connections made the area attractive for new residences. Its later identity as the Gold Coast emerged from this late nineteenth-century concentration of wealth, rather than from a single planned foundation.

Palmer Mansion and Lakefront Prestige

The neighbourhood's social status was firmly established by Potter Palmer's enormous mansion, built in the 1880s near the lakefront on North Lake Shore Drive. Although the house was demolished in 1950, its presence helped define the area as a preferred address for Chicago's commercial and civic elite. Around it grew substantial residences, private clubs and carefully planned streets, including the mansion-lined blocks associated with Astor Street. The neighbourhood's architecture from this period reflects the ambitions of a rapidly industrialising city whose leading families sought a residential district with access to both downtown commerce and open lake views.

Gold Coast became an important setting for experiments in domestic architecture during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
