    Ferne Clyffe State Park is located on Illinois Route 37, approximately one mile south of Goreville and 12 miles south of Marion. From Interstate 57, take the Goreville exit and follow the signs to Route 37. From Interstate 24, take the Goreville/Tunnel Hill exit and follow the signs to Route 37. Once on Route 37, the park entrance is clearly marked. Parking is available in multiple lots throughout the park. Parking is free.

    From the village of Goreville, Ferne Clyffe State Park is accessible via Goreville Road, although this route is no longer the main entrance. A trail connects the park to Goreville, offering a scenic route for hikers. The walk from Goreville to the main park area is approximately 2 miles. Be aware that this trail can be steep and difficult in places.

The park's history dates back to 1899 when two brothers purchased part of the area, then in 1923, Ferne Clyffe was named the most beautiful spot in Illinois. Emma Rebman, a local school teacher, acquired the land and opened it to the public for a small admission fee. In 1949, the state of Illinois purchased the land from Rebman, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Today, Ferne Clyffe State Park attracts over 200,000 visitors annually, drawn to its scenic beauty and recreational opportunities. The park boasts 18 hiking trails, ranging in difficulty from easy strolls to moderate treks, allowing visitors to explore the diverse terrain. Popular trails include the Big Rocky Hollow Trail, leading to a 100-foot waterfall, and the Hawk's Cave Trail, showcasing a massive 150-foot-long shelter bluff. Rock climbing is another popular activity, with approximately 150 climbing routes available. Ferne Clyffe Lake, a 16-acre lake constructed in the late 1950s, offers bank fishing opportunities. While swimming and boating are prohibited, the lake provides a serene setting for relaxation and wildlife viewing.
