Round Bluff Nature Preserve, nestled within Ferne Clyffe State Park near Goreville, Illinois, offers a unique hiking experience through a protected natural area. Dedicated in 1973, this 53-acre preserve is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and stands out for its isolated sandstone bluff, an uncommon sight amidst the park's hardwood forests. This geological feature creates an 'island' feel, separating it from the main bluffs of Ferne Clyffe. The preserve's unique glade environment fosters a diverse collection of rare plants and flora not typically found in the surrounding region. Along the shaded sandstone outcrops, you might spot northeastern relict plants like bottle gentian, black chokecherry, and hay-scented fern. The sandstone glades on the bluff's south side are home to prickly pear cactus, rock pink, and blue curls. The forested areas provide habitat for various songbirds, including the yellow-billed cuckoo, eastern wood pewee, and red-headed woodpecker; keep an eye out for black vultures soaring overhead. The Round Bluff Nature Preserve Trail is a 1-mile loop that allows hikers to explore the preserve's perimeter. While the hike is generally easy, some sections feature long series of steps. The trail leads through a mix of younger forest and rich woodlands, particularly known for its displays of early spring wildflowers like spring beauty and toothwort.
