Giant City State Park Lodge & Restaurant is a historic and scenic destination located within Giant City State Park in Makanda, Illinois. The lodge was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) from 1934 to 1935, using locally quarried sandstone and lumber, reflecting the regional atmosphere and decor. Dedicated in 1936 by Illinois Governor Henry Horner, the lodge and cabins have been a popular attraction for decades. The lodge offers 34 cabins with modern amenities, including heat, air conditioning, full baths, TVs, and telephones. Guests can choose from historic cabins, prairie cabins, and bluff cabins, each offering a unique experience. The Bald Knob Dining Room is renowned for its family-style fried chicken dinners, served with classic Southern sides. The lodge also features a gift shop, lounge, and an outdoor swimming pool. Giant City State Park, encompassing over 4,000 acres, is known for its unusual sandstone formations that resemble city streets, hence the name "Giant City". The park offers numerous hiking trails, including the popular Giant City Nature Trail, which winds through the impressive bluffs. Other activities include horseback riding, rock climbing, and fishing. The Giant City Visitor Center provides interpretive displays on the park's geology, plants, animals, and history.
