Giant City State Park Lodge & Restaurant is more than just a place to stay and eat; it's an experience steeped in history and surrounded by the stunning landscapes of Southern Illinois. Located within the 4,000-acre Giant City State Park, near Makanda, Illinois, the lodge offers a tranquil escape with a touch of rustic elegance. The lodge's history dates back to the Great Depression when the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) constructed it between 1934 and 1935. The CCC utilized local sandstone and lumber to create a building that reflected the region's atmosphere. The original complex included the lodge and six cabins, dedicated in 1936 by Illinois Governor Henry Horner. The CCC later expanded the facilities, adding a dining room, kitchen, and six more cabins. The skilled craftsmanship of the CCC workers led to a commission to furnish Pere Marquette State Park's lodge as well. Today, the lodge features 34 cabins equipped with modern amenities, including heat, air conditioning, and private bathrooms. Guests can choose from various cabin types, such as the Historic Cabins, Prairie Cabins, and Bluff Cabins. The Bald Knob Dining Room is known for its family-style fried chicken dinners, drawing visitors from across the region. The menu also features other Southern-style dishes, ensuring a satisfying meal for every palate. The Great Room, with its stone fireplace and original oak furnishings, provides a cozy space to relax. Giant City State Park, surrounding the lodge, offers many outdoor activities. Hiking enthusiasts can explore various trails, including the popular Giant City Nature Trail with its unique sandstone formations. Rock climbing and rappelling are permitted in designated areas. The park also features an equestrian campground and a 12-mile loop trail for horseback riding. The Visitor Center provides interpretive displays about the park's geology, plants, animals, and history.
