They also review applications for Certificates of Appropriateness for any exterior changes to designated historic properties, ensuring that any alterations are in line with the district's character. The Historic Preservation Commission promotes historic preservation within the community and educates residents about available resources.Joliet boasts a rich diversity of architectural styles, with over 2,000 buildings constructed before 1900 and 11,000 before 1950. The city's history is deeply intertwined with its industrial past, particularly its limestone quarries, which provided the stone for many iconic buildings, including the Old Joliet Prison. Today, Joliet balances its industrial legacy with a focus on tourism, entertainment, and the preservation of its historic sites.

    The Joliet Historical Preservation office is located at 150 W Jefferson St in downtown Joliet. From the Joliet Gateway Center, walk west on Jefferson Street for about 0.2 miles. The City Hall, where the office is located, will be on your left.

    Public Transport

    Pace bus routes serve the downtown Joliet area. Check the Pace website for the most up-to-date routes and schedules. From the Joliet Gateway Center, several Pace bus routes have stops near the City Hall. A single ride fare is $1.75.

    Parking

    Metered street parking is available near Joliet City Hall. As of September 1, 2025, downtown Joliet offers free parking for up to two hours in designated zones between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Be aware of the zone system to avoid tickets. The Ottawa Street Parking Deck is also nearby and offers paid parking at $1 per hour. The Courthouse Lot, managed by Will County, offers parking at a flat rate of $8.
