Discover more about Lincoln Trail Homestead

Lincoln Trail Homestead State Park and Memorial, located near Decatur, Illinois, marks the spot where Abraham Lincoln's family first settled in Illinois in 1830. The Thomas Lincoln family, including a young Abraham, moved here from Indiana and built an 18x18 foot log cabin. They cleared land and planted crops, but after a harsh winter and bouts of illness, the family moved on after only a year. Abraham Lincoln then began his independent life, later becoming the 16th President of the United States. Today, the 162-acre park offers visitors a chance to explore the natural landscape and reflect on this early chapter in Lincoln's life. While the original cabin is gone, a marker indicates its approximate location. Visitors can explore three short nature trails, including one along the Sangamon River, and enjoy picnic areas. The park also features mature trees, including black walnut, and a pioneer cemetery. The park provides a serene setting to connect with nature and learn about Illinois' history. The park was created in 1938 and formally dedicated in 1957. While the Lincoln's stay was brief, this location offers a tangible connection to his early life and the challenges faced by pioneer families.
